Below is my process for conceptualizing, directing, and producing “The Addams Family Musical” as a part of Klein Forest High schools' 2019- 2020 season. *All photos and video clips used are from the rehearsal/ build process*
When deciding which musical to direct for the 2019-2020 season, I was drawn to The Addams Family. This stage production brings to life the iconic characters created by Charles Addams in his darkly humorous and macabre cartoons. As a ’90s kid, I grew up with the movies and animated television series, falling in love with how the Addams family navigated every adventure with passion, authenticity, and unwavering togetherness. It’s this timeless, lovable quality that has made the family a cult classic.
Bringing this musical adaptation to Klein Forest High School challenged our students to commit to some truly unusual circumstances. The production demands equal parts acting and singing, with significant opportunities for choreography and movement. Knowing this, I worked closely with my cast to help them develop the emotional stamina required to bring these characters and scenes to life. For instance, Gomez is swept up in the whirlwind of the plot, constantly running from scene to scene, pulled (no pun intended) by Wednesday and Morticia.
The Addams Family Musical is an excellent vehicle for young actors to explore character commitment, bold decision-making, and themes of acceptance and “otherness.” The story thrives on cause and effect, offering students an exciting and rewarding opportunity to engage with complex relationships and emotional depth.
Production Statistics
The technical elements of this production were just as essential as the performances themselves. The Addams Family has a very distinct look and feel, centered around their death-filled, museum-like home. Transitioning between locations—from a graveyard to the interior of the Addams home, a torture room, and the grand hall—was no small feat. Every technical detail played a crucial role in creating the show’s eerie and intentional atmosphere.
From the iconic costumes and macabre props to the haunting sound effects and strategic lighting design, each element contributed to the overall aesthetic. The lighting, in particular, was crafted to make the home feel “dark” yet purposeful, drawing attention to the actors and bringing the lovable Addams characters to life.
