A Midsummer Nights Dream / by Fernando Albarran

Below are my concept and ideas for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as a part of North Shore High schools' 2015- 2016 season. *All photos and video clips used are from the rehearsal/ build process*

Setting this production in its original location, Athens, gave me the opportunity to stylize the design to reflect a regal and “sculpted” aesthetic. From the start, I envisioned a central tree that would evolve as the scenes changed, brought to life through the fairies’ magic. I pictured the tree shifting into place, spinning to reveal Puck hidden inside—a dynamic and enchanting moment on stage.

To achieve this effect, I hung white fabric from three different batons to serve as a versatile ceiling that could change height and arrangement. This fabric initially formed a canopy-like roof for the palace and later descended to connect with the tree trunk, transforming into its foliage. By utilizing strategic lighting and gobos, we cast intricate patterns across the layers of fabric, adding depth, texture, and an ethereal quality to the enchanted forest.
