Choreographing In the Heights was a true labor of love. The music, cultural references, urban energy, and rich storytelling provided endless possibilities for expressing emotions through movement and dance. During auditions, we were blown away by the incredible response, matched only by the talent and drive of the performers. The final cast included just under 50 members, with 31 in the ensemble—a remarkable group that became the foundation for creating the vibrant sense of community so central to the production.

We positioned ensemble members throughout the two-story set and even in the auditorium, which added depth and energy to numbers like “Carnaval Del Barrio,” “Blackout,” and the iconic “96,000.” My primary goal with the choreography was to highlight our students’ individuality while also helping them navigate partner and group choreography with confidence. This approach allowed each performer to shine while contributing to the collective energy and heart of the show.
