After my first year at Klein Forest High School, I realized that our students had not yet performed in a Black Box theatre space. I wanted to give them that experience and equip them with the tools to become storytellers in a more intimate setting. Creating the world for this production of The Giver was an absolute joy, and I let my imagination run wild while reading the script.

I envisioned Jonas as the focal point of the production, guiding the audience through each scene transition. To achieve this, I designed a turntable that allowed Jonas to remain in motion as the scenes shifted seamlessly from his home to the Giver’s home.

As we began piecing together the set, costumes, and props, I noticed everything was grey—a grey stage, grey furniture, grey costumes, and even white gloves. At first, it seemed like too much, almost an overwhelming monotony. But when the stage lights came on, softening the edges and blending all the elements, the greyscale world of The Giver truly came to life. Seeing greyscale in real life was mesmerizing, and it transformed the stage into a magical representation of the story’s themes and tone.
