Below is my process for conceptualizing, directing, and producing “The Addams Family Musical” as a part of Klein Forest High schools' 2019- 2020 season. *All photos and video clips used are from the rehearsal/ build process*
The action in this production primarily takes place in two different homes, with the script focusing on two families that appear very different on the surface but share strikingly similar human experiences at their core.
When designing the ground plan for this production, I wanted to mirror the families’ homes to create a sense of visual balance between the spaces. This design allowed the focus to remain on the action and how the circumstances of the show impact these shared environments.
The curtains behind each couch served a dual purpose as makeshift scrims, revealing the action occurring in the rooms behind each living room. By using downlighting, we highlighted the activity in these spaces, and with backlighting, we created striking shadows on the curtains, adding depth and intrigue to the visual storytelling.
