Once on this Island / by Fernando Albarran

Below is my process for conceptualizing, directing, and producing “Once on this Island” as a part of Klein Forest High schools' 2018- 2019 season. *All photos and video clips used are from the rehearsal/ build process*

Producing the technical elements for Once on This Island was an exciting journey of creativity and construction. My goal was to design a set with multiple levels and areas where characters could fully utilize the space—not only to create stunning stage pictures but also to express the choreography across every part of the set.

We built ramps that connected the stage to the house of the auditorium, with the orchestra pit at the center. This design allowed the characters to dance in the aisles and use the entire space to immerse the audience in the vibrant, dynamic atmosphere of the island.

Color played a crucial role in the technical storytelling of this production. Each god had their own distinct color, which was incorporated into various design elements as they interacted with the island and its characters. My intention was for all the technical components to work cohesively, enhancing the story without relying on spectacle for spectacle’s sake. Every design choice was motivated by the narrative, creating a unified and immersive experience for the audience.
